Week 9: Student as Agent of Change

Image
After a few weeks of exposure to SDG goals, now it's time for students to do something to bring change to the campus for a better sustainable development environment.  There are a lot of student projects being implemented in IIUM to produce a nature-sustainable campus.  There are also 6 indicators for campus sustainability which are:  Setting and Infrastructure Energy and Climate change Waste Water Transportation Education and Research for each indicator plays an important role in improving specific sectors to achieve a Green and Sustainable Campus.  From my understanding Green campus is about an environment where most of the activities of action take place, it is all closely related with SDGs which bring a clean environment, zero pollution, security, and many more.    For example, of Waste; in IIUM students practice 3R which is Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle where they should dump their waste separately according to its label of waste.  Other than that, t...

Week 8: Sustainable Development Number 16 & 17

Image
Fri this week, I gained knowledge about the importance of SDG 16 & 17 and how the institutions implement it to achieve the goals.   SDG 16 is about Pace, Justice, and Strong Institutions To put it simply, it is about promoting peace, justice, and strong institutions. Basically, this goal is to guarantee society's safety and tranquility with no violence committed randomly everywhere, and justice at every level of society. By doing that, we can create a tranquil atmosphere free from criminal activity and without great deals of fear being committed in society.  SDG 17 is about Partnership for the goals It refers to the need for cross-sector and cross-country collaboration in pursuit of all the goals by the year 2030.  It is about strengthening and streamlining cooperation between nation-states, both developed and developing, using the SDGs as a shared framework and vision for defining that collaborative way forward.  There are 5 categories and each t...

Week 6: Roles of Universities & Sustainable Development

Image
From what I gained in the week 6 class is about the role of university and sustainable development.  I'm grateful that I am part of the IIUM community and as a student, I agree that IIUM is the Garden of Knowledge and Virtue. Besides learning to be Muslim Ummah Rahmatan Lil-Alameen, IIUM also applied education for Sustainable Development. This clearly shows that the university has picked up the United Nations' global call and conveyed the message to all IIUM students. One of the elements applied in IIUM is called 'SEJAHTERA'. Sejahtera Centre for Sustainability and Humanity is one organization that was established to champion the sustainability, humanity, and Sejahtera agenda for IIUM. Some of the programs organized by this organization are World Humintarian Day where they give out food at Flat Makmur Sri Selayang, Desa Sejahtera Pinggiran UIAM, and at Kg. Sg. Kertas. Other than that, IIUM also is preparing their students with education which is needed in the industry ...

Week 7: Challenges to Sustainable Development

Image
The summary of what I learned in this week's class is about the limits of having a good environment to achieve Sustainable Development environment.  Why must there be a need for Sustainable Development? because: overexploitation of natural resources           - more than 60% of the world's marine fisheries are declining.            - to sustain resources for future generations.  climate change           - increase in atmospheric temperature and extreme weather events.           - from current human activities and unchanged habits will greatly impact the next generation.  scarcity resources           - Food production needs to double over the next 40 years.           - due to many agricultural lands being degraded for project development            - our next generation may suffer a scarcity...

Book Exhibition at KAED Gallery It is a book our Prof suggested for us to read, named Science for Sustainable Development: Islamic and Interfaith Perspective.  This book was published by Institut Kefahaman Islam Malaysia (IKIM). This book can be a perfect reference for understanding the interaction of science, sustainable development, and spiritual dimensions.

Week 4: RCE Exhibition

Image
Week 4   In week 4 I went to RCE Exhibition in ICC, IIUM.  It is an exhibition that gathers a lot of organizations that based on Sustainable Development. we also had a session with alumni of IIUM and she shared about her Projek Buku Jalanan Chow Kit (BJCK). How they as a non-profit organization (NGO) volunteer to give free education to street kids at Chow Kit. From a small number of members going to Chow Kit and open tables on the street for the kids to get informal education session.   I learned that children have rights which are important for us as adults to ensure they get their rights: right for education right for security right for rest and playing  right for health    These are what Projek Buku Jalanan Chow Kit tried to convey, to protect, care, and provide what they (the kids) should get.  These are to prepare the kids  to become responsible and contributing members of society, they believe that at risk youths need a safe environment...

Week 3: Maqasid Shariah and Sustainable Development

Image
Maqasid Shariah and Sustainable Development For this week I've learned about Maqasid Shariah (Objectives of Islamic Law) and how it relates to Sustainable Development. As sustainable development strives for a balance in economy, social, and environment, Islam too derives a balance between the three based on Maqasid Shariah which aims to promote and protect the well-being of people and nature. We can see both elements share the same goals to ensure justice and equity, the sustainability of human beings, and achieve environmental stewardship. However, in Islam, Maqasid Shariah has the role of guiding sustainable development to build an ummah of Rahmatan Lil Alamin.  There are 5 key principles of Maqasid Shariah and we can see how it is connected with Sustainable Development to achieve specific goals.    The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is to offer a universal framework for sustaining peace and prosperity for both people and the environment together involvin...
