Week 2: Islam and Sustainable Development

Short brief of what I have learn in week 2. It is about:

How to sustain the society from an Islamic perspective?

sustainable development in Islam emphasizes about the economy, environment and social.

  • Islam and Environmental Sustainability

People should realize that the conservation of the environment is religious duty demanded by Allah.

And do good as Allah has done good to you. And desire not corruption in the land. Indeed, Allah does not like corrupters." (QS. [28]Al-Qasas verse 77)

  • Islam and Economic Sustainability
In Islam also promotes development and both socially and economically.

"That is so because Allah will never change a grace which He has bestowed on a people until they change what is in their own selves. And verily, Allah is All-Hearer, All-Knower." (Al-Quran, 8:53)

Islam prohibits poverty as it is close to disbelief (kufr). Islam provides effective means for socio-economic improvement via Waqf (endowment) and Zakat (alms) provisions, indeed, these Islamic economic principles are based on sharing and caring wealth distribution, likewise any other trading or commercial transactions in Islam.

  • Islam and Social Sustainability
Muslim as Khalifah (vicegerent) on earth. The one with responsible to do goods and avoid bad behavior to sustain the social sustainability.
